Microtransit is a flexible transit service, often booked through a smartphone app, that uses shuttles or vans to pick up multiple riders. It can run on a set schedule or provide on-demand requests and may follow a fixed route or change routes.
Microtransit uses technology to track and respond to real-time demand. It helps commuters who need first- and last-mile connections and riders with disabilities who need assistance getting to and from stops or stations. It can also enhance transportation options in rural or suburban areas where transit is less frequent, widespread or has time gaps.

In 2016, Centralina Regional Council led the development of the region’s first Freight Mobility Plan. Centralina collaborated with regional partners from 14 counties in two states, including local officials, transportation organizations, economic development organizations, private rail and trucking companies and logistics and distribution firms.
